Purim Activities

Saturday, February 28th, Noon-ish(after services) - Nosh and Spiel .  For centuries, Jews have coped by using (what else?) humor.  Join us for a fresh, musical/comedic take on the Purim story that celebrates the power of humor in hard times - - times when satire was even more dangerous than today. A Special preview performance by the Berkeley Jewish Renewal Spielers. FREE.

Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 10:00 am to NoonPurim Carnival sponsored by the Gersten Religious School and the Beth Sholom Preschool.  Games, prizes, hamentaschen.  Wear a costume and be admired by your friends and family.

Wednesday, March 4th at 7pm - MEGILLAH READING followed by HAMANTASCHEN BAKE-OFF

Family Shabbat and Elijah/Maren B'nai Mitzvah

Friday, March 6, 2015 Shabbat Worship Service and Family Dinner.  Service begins at 6:30 pm in the Main Sanctuary followed by dinner in Zucker Hall celebrating as Maren and Elijah become B’nai Mitzvah.

ZIMRIYAH Music Festival

Friday, March 13, 2015 following services which begin at 8:00 pm -   ZIMRIYAH Music Festival.  This year our Zimriyah will feature the amazing Yair Dalal.  Yair, a composer, violinist, oud player and singer, is a prolific musician who plays an important role in shaping the global world music scene.  He is an Israeli musician of Iraqi-Jewish descent.  Yair performs all over the world. Cantor says, “I am so excited to bring him to our community.”

Sunday March 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm in Zucker Hall.  Sisterhood sponsored book discussion.  Loretta Siegel, chair.  We will be discussing Alice Hoffman’s ”The Museum of Extraordinary Things: A Novel”. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Thank you for your patience as I recover from the total knee replacement surgery last month.  I am back on my feet (literally) and ready to resume my classes and seminars at Temple Beth Sholom.

Our Cantor's High Holy Day Drash: Kol Nidre, 5775

In another 10 days we will gather for Kol Nidre - the evening service of Yom Kipppur that is given that name by the opening prayer that launches us into 24 hours of fasting and asking for forgiveness. In preparation, I thought it might be instructive to review some of its history and some of the concepts we encounter in KN.
